Bonefish Gotcha Fly – A Proven Flats Fishing Classic
The Bonefish Gotcha fly is a legendary pattern renowned for its effectiveness on the flats. Whether you’re stalking bonefish in the Bahamas, Belize, or the Florida Keys, this fly’s simple yet irresistible design is a must-have for anglers seeking success.
• Iconic Design: Featuring a lightweight body, bead-chain or dumbbell eyes, and subtle flash, the Gotcha imitates small shrimp and baitfish that bonefish feed on.
• Stealth and Precision: Its natural presentation and ability to sink quickly make it ideal for shallow flats and spooky fish.
• Durability and Strength: Tied on high quality Mustad Hooks and with premium materials.
History of the Gotcha Fly
The Gotcha fly was first tied in the 1970s by Jim McVay during a fishing trip to Andros Island, Bahamas. After struggling to find the perfect fly, McVay improvised with pink craft fur and a piece of silver Mylar he borrowed from his daughter’s hair clip. His creation proved so effective that guides and anglers alike started calling it the “Gotcha” for how often bonefish were hooked with the fly. Today, the Bonefish Gotcha remains a cornerstone of flats fishing, its design continually refined but true to its roots.
